Having it all in Horsham
As you approach this home just outside Horsham, there is nothing to suggest this is anything other than a typical executive house. However, tucked out of sight, this is a property bristling with technology that has fully embraced the renewable energy revolution slowly taking place across the country.
You could say it ‘has it all’, with its 6.5kWp solar PV system and a multitude of devices carefully selected to enable the owner Steve, to maximise self-consumption of the ‘home grown’ electricity.
Steve, who was approaching retirement was keen to take the opportunity to ‘manage’ energy costs for the future and, having made a decision to extend the detached garage, created the opportunity to fit a large solar PV array. When looking for a reputable contractor SogoSolar came highly recommended by a local friend who had used SogoSolar a few years before.
To reflect the sensitive nature of the area, Steve was keen to specify a ‘roof integrated’ in which the solar panels are set into the roof and replace the tiles.
The system comprises:
- 20 Panasonic HIT high efficiency panels with a market leading 25-year warranty
- SolarEdge 6kW inverter, also with a market leading 12-year warranty
- 10 kWh LG Chem battery storage system which stores surplus energy generated during the day for use at night
- 2 Myenergi ‘eddi’ power diverters which provide hot water
- Myenergi ‘zappi’ EV charging point for charging the new Tesla Model 3 car.
The solar panels generate approximately 5,500 kWh of electricity per annum out of last year’s 8,000 kWh consumption, a figure that will grow with the recent addition of the Tesla Model 3. In the summer months the property is almost 100% self-sufficient on many days and there is even electricity to spare which can now be used to charge the Tesla car via the zappi charger.
This smart car charger allows Steve to charge the car both directly from surplus power from the solar panels and, overnight, using cheap electricity via an ‘off peak’ tariff. Steve has full visibility of the energy flows within the property thanks to both the SolarEdge and Myenergi App’s. With the Myenergi App, Steve can even chose which devices receive the surplus energy, giving him a high degree of control over the solar energy, enabling him to prioritise how the energy is used.
